I use a hornady lnl ap progressive because I got a deal on it. Hornady's customer service has been wonderful, but if I were playing retail I would go Dillon. The Hornady priming system is fragile/tempermental. Look at the Redding turret setup. You can use it single stage and it should turn out some fine rifle rounds. I run my service rifle loads on the progressive normally with good results.
The hornady lnl ap is a piece of garbage. Get a dillion 550 or 650 and you will not regret it. I work at a manufacturer and we fought with one for over 6 hours trying to get it running right. We took it down and sold it to a guy who helps us in the Midwest and he fought with it for 2 1/2 months before he finally got it dialed in. You can take a dillion out of a box and be running ammo within minutes.
I disagree about your opinion of the Hornady being garbage. For the skilled reloader, it is quite easy to use. I do agree that the Dillon is the superior machine, but the Hornady works just fine for those who are mechanically inclined.
I ended up buying the Hornady LNL AP. This is the reloader my friend had told me he liked best after he researched them. He is definitely mechanically inclined and is decent with reloading too. I hope he will enjoy it.
ive been loading on dillion 550 progressive for 27 years . great loader . if u have problems they are there when u call need help. good instruction come with it . i have loaded 400 rounds in hour before . rifle about 250 . my wife even loads for me. call dillion and get them send u copy of blue press has all prices in it, or go on line. i had a rcbs rockchucker i loaded on in ln late 70s did good job just took a lot of time.
OP's friend is not going to get set up on a Dillon 550 for 4 calibers for $500.
I would recommend the Lee Classic Cast turret. It's the best press Lee makes, and despite any claims you hear about Lee, it's an outstanding quality machine. It switches between calibers (including rifle, pistol, different primer sizes) in seconds. Capable of about 200 rounds/hour. For that budget, the loader could have four turrets, each dedicated to a caliber, each with a dedicated powder drop. Could probably also use the dies he has been using single stage. With money left over. It's also a machine built to last a lifetime.
