Official notification regarding weapons on UNG campuses

Greetings,

The Department of Public Safety has received numerous questions regarding legislation regarding weapons on campus and whether or not the new legislation allows the carry of weapons with a weapons carry license. On May 29, Georgia's Attorney General issued an opinion clarifying new laws regarding weapons in school safety zones. Please be aware that carrying weapons within a school safety zone is prohibited, except that those who have a weapons carry license may have a weapon when they are parked in or traveling through a school safety zone, such as when they are dropping off or picking up a student. UNG's school safety zone includes all buildings and facilities, including residence halls, athletic and recreational facilities, on our four campuses. UNG Public Safety officers will enforce this law, just as we do any law, in an effort to keep the peace within and around our University.
For more information, please see UNG News or the Attorney General's website.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email me directly.

Sincerely,
Justin Gaines

An opinion. So noted.

It's not really the kind of "opinion" that the AG's office normally issues, and which are cited as either persuasive or controlling authority for the State's agents, and considered by courts.
This is not an "official" opinion nor even an "unofficial" one. There's very little legal analysis. It's just a memo. A quick, off-the-cuff casual Here's My Two Cents' type of opinion.
Of course I don't expect the AG's office to ever contradict this. If they come out with a real official or unofficial opinion that has a reference number assigned to it, they'll probably make the same assertions as they made here, but with added citations to actual statutes and court cases that, they will say, supports their side.
So it's good to know what the AG's office has in mind, but this particular casual memo isn't really the kind of opinion decision-makers normally rely on.

Kiss n go....same law we've had for years.

Now if they would just go after criminals when they commit crimes instead of punishing those who wish to have protection when walking into a government mandated "can't protect yourself zone" then life would be grand but until then we have to be sitting ducks on our way to and from anti gun establishments while the criminals have the option of picking us apart at any time.

Wonderful,.......thank you Oh Gods of zero tolerance with common sense cast to the wayside.
