Big buck down!!

Here is the story.. Funny thing is, there is no story with this deer!! Lol, my wife and I welcomed our son Archer into the world 16 days ago. Graciously, my work gives me 2 weeks parental leave. I knew there wouldn't be any hunting the first week and didn't really expect to the 2nd week... With the season abnormally warm and very dry in the mountains, we were having a hard time pattern any deer due to the amount of acorns. You can go to any oak tree and fill a 5 gallon bucket.

So back to the deer... I was not getting any pics of deer like I was during bow season so I was getting discouraged. While mama and the baby were sleeping, I decided to go do a little scouting. I finally found a few scrapes and horn trees but nothing to really get me excited. So while making a diaper run to Wal-Mart, I grabbed some golden scrape scent to put in my dripper. I went and made a mock scrape close to the ones I found and hung a camera up. 5 days later (this past Friday) I went and checked it. There were no bucks on cam and just 3 does. One of the does looked like a horse, she was huge! So being doe days this weekend, I decided if I saw her, I was going to shoot her. Well Sunday it was suppose to be 42 and the coldest morning of the year. The spot was a basically a finger ridge with 4 steep hills running towards a little valley in hardwoods. Lots of white oaks and mountain laurel around. So I ease into the place downwind of where I think the deer are coming from. The wind was perfect and I cleared me a spot out against a big oak tree and sat on the ground where I could see the best. about 15 minutes into the hunt, the wind shifted and started blowing the opposite direction (thank God for this later) I wanted to get up and move since the wind changed but since it was so dry and I sounded like a elephant walking in, I decided to stay put. 10 minutes later I hear a squirrel barking from the way I walked in. I looked and listened and never saw anything. I was off day dreaming when I thought I heard something different than the 1243 squirrels running around. When I looked up, I saw a deer coming through from where I walked in. I could see it was big bodied so I thought it was the doe. After a second, I could see the "chicken walk" as I call it and knew it was a buck. I threw up the gun and saw a good set of horns. The next tree he walked by I knew it was time to shoot (about 75 yards) I pulled the trigger and he turned around and started running parallel with me. He was probably 50 yards running wide open and I shot him again. Then about 80 yards out, he stopped behind two big trees and I could see his horns moving but the body was blocked. I thought how and the hell did I miss him. then all of a sudden, he dropped. Once I regained my composure, I walked over to him. The first shot was right behind the shoulder and the 2nd shot running was 3 inches behind it. This was the first deer since my son was born. I couldn't have been more tickled. Then we had to drag him 200 yards and up a mountain but I would do it again tomorrow if given the chance. To God the glory and for a wife letting me go hunting with a 2 week old!!
