My question is did he ship the gun to a FFL for his uncle in PA or did he hand delivery it to him? Related to that, do you have to go through a FFL if the buyer of the gun is a resident of another state?

I wonder why or if his lawyer has argued that this case is proof the law works as intended? After all the defendant is standing before the court so they DID know who the first buyer was and they were able to trace the ownership of this paticular gun. The system worked,if it didn't the current case would not be possible.

Yes, you do. A longarm can go through an FFL in either state, but a handgun must go through one in the buyers home state.
