My daughter is looking for a decent bolt gun in .308 for her husband. I know exactly nothing about bolt guns so I'm not much help. I know she wants to spend < $500 on one, used if possible to get more value, and the question is what is a quality rifle gun in this price range? Anybody in SE GA with something good for sale PM me...

depends on the desired usage I suppose. Should be able to find Tika or a Remmy for that $$. I doubt you will find one with optics or anything other than just a rifle for that money unless it is one that was a package deal. They use really cheap scopes on those.

My SIL likes to hunt (he was raised in WV) and enjoys shooting at longer distances up to maybe 500 yards. Optics are something he can decide on later IMHO...

If you can, try to find a Savage package deal it will come with a scope...I'm going to assume he wants it for hunting. If he is looking for a taticool heavy barrel gun, you might find a Savage or Remington in that price range if you get lucky.

It's really hard to beat a Savage or a Marlin X series bolt guns.
The Marlin is basically a Savage, has the same Accu-trigger and very smooth action.
Both are dead nuts accurate, I had two in .270 and the rifle can shoot better than I can.
I bought both of mine used for $300 each with scopes, seen a new Marlin XS7 .308 in a local shop for $350 without a scope.
Savage's usually run in that price range also.

Another one I'll recommend, although most people look down their nose at them because it's an "entry" level rifle, is the Mossberg 100ATR.
Notice I didn't call it cheap, even though they can be had for $225 out the door from your local Academy sports.
They are real shooters, if I can get the cross hairs on it, it's down with this weapon.
Iused mine as my go to hunting rifle and I've taken several deer with it, now I take it when it's raining, they have a matte type cerakote finish and will not rust.
Here's a pic of my Mossberg 100 ATR chambered in .308 when I sighted it, factory scope.

Well, I just listed a pistol for trade to see if I can snag something decent. I'd just gift it to my daughter (thru her FFL of course) and that would make her very happy...
