We are fans of Rottweilers which back in the 80s and 90s seemed to have a bad rep but ours was the best dog you could have ever asked for. Since shes passed away I've been wanting a blue pit and while my wife really like them and the way they look she is scared that it would turn out like this dog and snap at any time. Is there some reason behind it or are some pits just prone to snapping?

I won't have a larger dog or a pit because my wife is not an Alpha leader. If she was I'd have an American Bulldog for the rest of my life. Other than that I have nothing. . . . The children are more important than anything else. Dogs ALWAYS seek to be the alpha. My pugs fought to be Alpha. My oldest pug, blind as a bat fought like hell to maintain her Alpha status until the end. She succeeded. When I found her passed away the other bitch was happy as ****.

A domestic animal is supposed to be safe around people, including children.

Most types and breeds are, but there are rouges and mean animals in the domestic population. It is our responsibility as owners and keepers to identify those dangerous ones and fix the problem. Training may be the answer for some, but for many the risk just isn't worth it.

Anyone that has worked with animals knows one or more folks that have been maimed or killed by one.

Do what you have to to keep your family and friends safe.

They are no more likely to become human aggressive than the average dog, but please, just take my word for it. I don't want to get into another long debate about it. Just take for granted I actually know what I'm talking about after working with dogs as a profession for almost 30 years.

One of the old nicknames for pit bulls is "nanny dog" because they are typically so good with children. Remember Petey from the Little Rascals? Pit Bull.

Any breed of dog can be dangerously aggressive. I've interacted with more dangerous labs and lab mixes than I have pits and pit mixes.

Also, I doubt seriously that this dog "snapped". There is almost assuredly a diagnosable cause for the aggression. That doesn't mean it can be reliably fixed, but it's not random.
