building carport on top of the driveway

why in the heck cant you just dig down next to the driveway, set the posts and concrete em in and be done with it?

Cause the posts will rot if in concrete.
That's why footers are such a great idea.
They could be poured outside the driveway footprint though.
 
I built a 20' x 16' lean-to carport recently off the front of my house. I don't have a concrete slab or asphalt, so I poured roughly 24" footers which embed the 4 x 4 posts within them. I live on top of a hill, so I get some tremendous winds and it is pretty rock solid. I used 2 x 6 for the trusses, which are 16' long. Everything is held together using deck screws.
