Cades Cove Timber Rattler

My wife and I took a drive today up to the mountains, taking the Cherola Skyway, cutting back west on the Tail of the Dragon, took the Foothills Parkway north to Townsend, and into Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountain National Park.

We struck out on spotting any bears this time, but we did manage to spot a Timber Rattler, which I have not seen in probably 20 years. It was actually on the alternate exit out of Cades Cove (Rich Mountain Rd).

It did not like being disturbed :)

I had two timber rattler babies as pets in my younger wilder days. Very cool OP.

They crawl on their bellies for a reason.

No Thanks.

Trail running I've come across most species of snake in the south. Jumped over a diamondback thinking it was a stick. Luckily it was a cold morning & the snake was lethargic so it barely moved.

On our property I've killed coral, copperhead, & pigmy rattlers, but haven't seen any larger rattlesnakes.

Only snake that's ever come after me, & this has happened more than once, is a cottonmouth/ water moccasin. Most snakes just leave you alone unless you mess with them, but those bastards are aggressive.
