Caliber Choice

For Georgians who hunt nothing larger than 140lb whitetails within 125yds, why do so many choose calibers like .300WM over more moderate ones like .30-30, .243 and .308? Is it a caliber pissing match with fellow hunters or something?

I went hunting several years ago with some acquaintances out in NE Georgia and was the only one to have anything smaller than a 300 mag. What gives?

Because at some point in their lives, they’ve lost a deer (usually a monster according to sources) while using a 243, 257, 270, 30-30, etc. Now, just cause there was only a drop of blood doesn’t mean it was a bad shot, just not enough gun. Hence, they upgrade.

And probably miss worse cause of recoil.

My friends brothers sons college roommates girlfriends uncles nephew that was da seal 6 sniper used a 300 win mag and said that’s what you want. When I can pronounce Lapua imma get one of those too for the big bucks.

I hunted one year with a 300. Blew a deers heart clear out the exit wound. Dropped like a stone. 308 is my go to though. Had to use my dad's extra rifle that year. There is nothing in the southeast a 308 wont take.
