Caliber to carry to deal with agressive bears or mountain lion?

A couple of weeks ago I got this small one off my back porch with a Crossman .177 BB pistol. 4 in the butt and he climbed right down.

Just grab em by the skin of the throat under the chin and hold on real tight and shake em until they submit. They can’t bite you when you’re holding em under the chin.
Are they very hard to hold after you've been disemboweled?

OP... Biggest thing you can shoot fast.

You could start by buying this for your 45.. https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=402

This is an article sent in from a guide who shot and killed a bear with his 9mm using the hard cast bullets.... https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=388

Any of the "outdoorsman" rounds listed on this page would probably work.. https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=146

The hard cast bullets will penetrate a lot better through bones than standard self-defense hollow points. I would say a nice 5" barrel 9mm with about 15-20 of the Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman rounds on tap would be nice to have at the ready. It would be nicer to have a bigger round, like a 44 magnum, but for the loss of additional rounds on tap, I'd probably stick to a semi-auto double stack. Your current pistol would probably work.
