I think it's actually good for 30 days past the exp. date.

I think you're thinking of the renewal time period. You can renew up to 30 days after expiration, but it won't protect you at all legally after it expires.

Renewal is $30 and about a two week wait for it to come in the mail here in Madison County.

I guess it varies from one county to the next though.

My buddy in Gwinnett applied for a first time CCW and got it in 2 weeks, faster then my renewal in the fulton cnty cesspool

If your close to expiring at renewal, then pay 1.00 for the 90 day temp extension. This extension covers you while carrying. It does NOT comply with 4473 NICS check's......

I recently renewed mine and it took two weeks to come just like they said it would.
