Is it still "porn" if it's undesirable? Factory finish! Even when it goes bad, it's still worth more than anything painted. This trend to throw paint jobs on new guns is killing my will to...participate.

Don't **** in this guy's thread y'all. Post up a pic or move along. :) Besides, even the factory is now coming out with cerekote finishes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Next thing you'll be siding with my dad who doesn't believe a gun is a real man's gun unless it has wood on it. He doesn't like my plastic guns (Glocks and AR's).

I actually have some very mixed emotions about cerekote jobs...I think some look pretty freaking awesome indeed. Regardless, I consider it a huge value deduction. I guess if intent is all 100% personal use...good...go for it. But as an investment, it's akin to polishing old coins. Sure they "look" better. But every swipe of a chemical laden polishing cloth, loses value. I'd rather have a rattle can paint job on a gun if I absolutely MUST change the color. It can be restored back to factory finish with a little acetone or paint thinner and some elbow grease. So, with that in mind, I'll share my rattle can paint job. I sprayed an ODT chicken lower with a combination of gray primer and dark gray fabric paint to get as close as I could to matching an older colt A1 upper. It was still a little off so I reluctantly sprayed a very light coat on the upper to blend/perfect the match. Colt gray has a greenish tinge. I tried to add a little OD green but never could match it. Sure...I could have opted for a Colt gray cerekote job...but I didn't want either the upper or the lower to be "permanently" altered. And I don't think it would have matched anyway given the age of the upper.

Here's the before pic I took before painting it...and while I was still shopping for appropriate parts like an A1 grip, stock and 3 prong flash hider. Only thing I still want to change is the charging handle to an old triangular A1 period correct one. Hopefully one day, I'll trip into one.

And here she is painted and refurnished...

I have done one Cerakote project. The instructions call for a heck of a lot more Cerakote than I actually mixed up (pigment + hardener). So if doing a small project (slide) use less. A cheap harbor freight air brush and a couple of filters to avoid moisture and a regulator to adjust the PSI down to obtain a good spray pattern.

The surface needs to be prepped in order to allow the coating to bond correctly. I used 120 grit aluminum oxide in a blasting cabinet.

For small jobs, a kitchen pass and some baking time cures the coating

Not too shabby. Cerakote is the way to go for a coating. It sprays thin enough to coat screws and screw holes.

I got a great deal on an old Dan Wesson .357 with about 90% of the original bluing gone. Really want to get it re-blued but no one around here does hot blue. Now, if I wanted to get it painted, there's 15 different places I could carry it to within 15 minutes of my house. I think all you need is an air compressor and a Midway or Brownells account, and your a professional refinisher.

Several are doing it themselves and getting pretty good results.... http://www.theoutdoorstrader.com/threads/630699-Hot-Bluing-Tips-and-Pics

Beautiful glock ramrod, and really nice shotty there OP! And while it tend believe that value is in the eye of the beholder, you could compare the gun world to the car world. Certain guns/cars are inherently better when left be i.e. A classic colt python, or a 64 Lincoln. I won't get into "this car = this gun" debate, just saying that some folks prefer that Lincoln with airbags, custom paint, and so on and so forth. Heck, there's magazines and websites and such with only that as a basis for content. And the OP digs cerakote, so he started a thread for like minded individuals. I've had several cerakoted firearms, and I like it a lot... On certain guns.

Enough with my hijack of the thread, sorry OP here's one of the inspirations for me to like cerakote, it's not mine, but I "borrowed" this pic from another forum
