The Gekko is the series I have and I enjoy it. I don't have any experience with the Shun, but they have an incredible reputation and I've never read anything bad about them, EVER.

2 outstanding choices IMO!

I also want to mention that the Gekko series is one of their most popular, if it's ever out of stock, they usually get more in fairly quickly.
 
I'm going the complete opposite of what you are looking for. If you are looking for a working knife in the kitchen, then it is hard to beat the Old Hickory knives. Carbon steel, made in the USA and they just work! For pennies compared to the other whiz bang knives. I have a sentimental attachment to them because my granddad used them for as far back as I can remember.
