I am on the fence as how often I should clean my guns. My dad has taught me to clean them after we have a range day. Some friends of mine tell me they hardly ever clean their guns. Would like some opinions. The guns are LCP, AR, and an XD.

Thanks

I wipe them each time I handle them...EDC gets wiped down in the eve before I put it on night stand, cleaned thoroughly after shooting. That's just me though.

clean them after use or when they get dirty

you cant overclean a gun i dont think so if your every day carry (EDC) has been carried alot and not shot it still might could use a cleaning

... you cant overclean a gun i dont think ...

I disagree. Every time you take a apart a gun there is opportunity for something to go wrong. How many walls can a 1911 spring bounce off of before it finds an open door and heads outside? 3. Over-cleaning is just more chances for improper cleaning.

I wipe down and boresnake after range trips. Full cleaning every so often or after big range days.

improper cleaning is a good way to tear up your barrel. on rifles you wait for the accuracy to degrade from copper fouling. not sure why that would be different for pistols. i will typically go 500-1000 rds on a pistol before i strip it down and do my thing. it often takes me a year or more to get through that much ammo in a pistol. i like long guns.

Depends on the gun and type of ammo, A typical AK I take to the range and run 200-300 rounds will get wiped down with a few patches put through it then and oil wipe down of moving parts, at the 500-1000 round mark it gets a full break down with trigger parts removed.
Any gun I shoot surplus ammo through corrosive or not gets full break down and cleaning.

My EDC is never what I call clean after shooting with it I break it down and clean it then step out the back door and but 2-3 rounds through it before I holster and carry.

Now when I get bored I will take guns out of the safe and clean them so really nothing stays dirty to long but I dont mind if something has a few hundred rounds through it hell that might make me shoot more. plus 99.9% of my shooting is done at home so it doesnt take long to reach my cleaning by round count limits.

My Dad preached it and I can do nothing but clean after every trip to shoot. I realize that things have changed and guns are different but I still can not help but do it his way. Hasn't let me down yet.

I clean the bore and action as soon as I think I've finished shooting for the day; do a complete disassembly and thorough cleaning before putting it away for a week.
Black powder habits.
