Clearing the capsized Golden Ray from St. Simon’s channel

I’d say he’s not a hero.
He’s the one that capsized it by driving it when it was incorrectly loaded and ballasted .
At least he wasn’t drunk like the guy driving the Exxon Valdez

The captain of the ship was in charge of knowing what's loaded, how it's loaded, and ballasting his ship. The pilot steers him out of the channel. Coast Guard hasn't released the report but everything during the investigation pointed to the captain and his officers.

Correctomundo.

The pilot makes suggestions, it's still up to the captain to give the orders. Just like the pilot of an aircraft, the ultimate decision on whether to go or not is up to him. doesn't matter what the tower says, or corporate, or the co-pilot, it is always going to be the pilot's decision, same with the captain of a ship.

The pilot of the Golden Ray had nothing to do with the ballasting, loading or anything else operational other than how to move it from point A to point B. Decisions on seaworthiness are 100% on the captain.
