College Football and Basketball ruined: NLRB just ruled college players can unionize!!

How can they unionize if they're not getting paid. at least they're no supposed to be. and does that mean that is no longer a need for the NCAA, or will that be rolled in as well?

yeh, so as a union, they will fight for revenue sharing with colleges and ncaa... A lot of colleges are coming out saying they will opt to end their D1 programs rather than allow student athletes to unionize. there's still an appeal process, but if this stands, it's the end of college sports as we know it.

Bizarre. What are they going to lobby for? Fewer practices? No outdoor practice when it's above xx degrees? If they form a 'union' all the walk ons need to demand scholarships.

One possibility would be compensation for using their names, images etc in video games, etc. (as with the Sam Keller vs EA Sports) case.

Why would they need to unionize for that?

the billion dollar question.... the argument is they don't have a seat at the table with the colleges and ncaa to demand a share of the revenue from the sport. they want to be paid and can demand more money as a union than as individuals. further they want to get better healthcare and educational guarantees for when they are done playing. virtually all of thee issue could be worked out WITHOUT a union, but the colleges have dragged their feet in making changes. i want to see players supported, hell even compensated to an extent, but a union is not the way to go. hopefully all parties will figure it out and come to an agreement.
