I am looking to replace a pistol stolen from me back years ago (1985) which I had bought as my first pistol (1973). The gun is a lightweight/alloy (not steel) .38 special manufactured in the early 1970's. The gun weighs about the same as the six shots that it holds when comparing one hand to the other. It has wooden grips which are larger than most other detective special grips.

I didn't realize that they made a snub nosed alloy pistol. I have a DSII from 1977, and its much heavier than the 6 rounds it holds. What was the finish?

I have a blued Detective Special snub and a Police Positive 4 inch barrel from 1977, the Royal Blue bluing on both of those guns is amazing. I heard that Colt outsourced the bluing to a 3rd party that went out of business and took the formula with them. Nobody has been able to recreate the color.

They also made the Viper in 77 which had an alloy frame (4 inch barrel only, blued or nickle)

Also I can recreate the high luster blueing from that era.

Here’s an Agent. This is a post ‘72 made model as it has the ejector shroud. It “was” nickel but my grandpa rubbed off all of the nickel off any carry gun so it didn’t gleam too much. Doesn’t have the Pony logo in the left side plate like all the other Colts do. Still shoots great. He bobbed the hammer too. But, as far as he was concerned just go to Sears and get another one.
