Complete hunting newbie has a stupid question

That 7.62x39 will get the job done. Finding a piece of public land that’s open to hog hunting with big game weapons will be a challenge. Good luck to you and your Son.
Remember that with the resent change in law, if fur bearer season is open on the land, you can now use center-fire rifles.

x2 for fort stewart. Never go home empty handed. Learn the rules before you go.
Yeah, lots of rules and now the MP’s are the game wardens. The one we got checked by was really cool, but you better be following ALL rules for sure!
We just got back from down there. It got really warm and rain set in towards the end of the trip. I learned a lot about that place over the course of 4 days. We saw a few hogs and found a ton of sign. I’m hoping to get to go back in February for a couple of days.

If you want a “hunting rifle” that isn’t expensive and offers fast follow-up shots,
and good enough accuracy for hogs out to 200 yards, consider a
lever-action .30-30 or Remington’s pump action model 760 or 7600 Gamemaster.
The Remmy comes in .30-06 and .308 and all-popular necked-down variations
of those two rounds. And 10 round aftermarket magazines are available for it,
which means this rifle can serve double duty as a homeland defense
/ Second Amendment Militia rifle too.

62 gr Federal Fusion - pretty much the same thing as the Gold Dots mentioned above. Watch the video below that explains shot placement, and you'll bust them all day long. If you want to use the 7.62, then again get the Fusions. Either will work just fine killing hogs and deer.

I have to agree, federal fusion or gold dots. You owe it to whatever your shooting to at least send something that will put them down quickly their way!
