I had a bunch of deer calls made by a reputable call maker. They are all Maple. Some of my customers (these were promo items) asked what is the best way to protect the wood finish when out in the field? Before I ask the call maker, just curious as to how do you hunters carry the calls when out in the woods, and more importantly, how do you protect the finish?

Do you carry it in your pocket, in a protective pouch or bag, or other method?

My last wooden call was a reed owl hoot for turkey hunting, but I can do a better and louder hoot with my voice and/or by cupping my hands together and blowing into them. It had a light coat of poly on it. Polyurethane will seal the wood. Disassemble the call and brush some on. Allow to dry before re-assembly.

On very cold days, keep the call tucked inside your jacket, to keep moisture on the reed from freezing. If not, when you try to use, it will sound like a duck being strangled to death. :painkiller:
