Just bought my first Diesel - 2000 F250 with the 7.3, ZF6 transmission. Of course I get it home and start driving it a few days and I get a check engine light intermittently while downshifting. Not sure what the issue is, can’t really replicate it. Although it feels like I get a dead pedal for a moment, the service engine light comes on, then it powers up again. I thought I was just not in gear, which is possible. Or maybe a bad TPS sensor based on my googles?

Anywho, any suggestions on a good diesel mechanic in the Kennesaw, Marietta, Dallas area? Maybe a local trader who is down to teach a newbie a couple things? I’ll pay you for your time ofc.

Being a 7.3 it won’t throw a code until it’s dead. I’m having similar problems but I’ve narrowed mine down to 2 options which I’m replacing both. Injectors which due to age alone. Diesel is dirty. Clogs happen. That leads to #2. In the fuel tank, lays a fuel pick up w/2 “catch baskets” that I’m positive that’s it. Start there. Better start than I got.

Download ForScan and get a good Bluetooth scan tool. The free version will tell you the codes and give you solutions but the paid app will allow you to run tests like a Ford dealership. I use OBD link for the scan tool, which is recommended by ForScan. It’s about $100 on Amazon. The truck will throw a code before something breaks, believe me

Get some in tank submersible fuel line and hang a screen pickup off the end of it. The OE plastic pickup is garbage.

A code scan is best to avoid firing the parts cannon and guessing
If you suspect the TPS, you can check the resistance on the Throttle Position Sensor with a multimeter.
Multiple u tube videos on this one.

Symptoms also seem to mimic a failing Cam Position Sensor.
When I drove a 7.3, I kept a spare in the glove box.

I hear good things about Diesel Dave. I also recommend Diamond D Motorsport in Hickory Flat for Powerstrokes. Smaller shop, works on all my trucks, but maybe a little too far for you.
