Disappointed with my local gun shop

I like Cherokee also , but you need to look around on Gunbroker. Cherokee has or had , (auction may be over now) several items on there including ARs.

And your point is?

If I had people willing to pay 3x the amount of something I had for sale, damn right I'm going to sell it for 3x more. Thats only good business

Did I say anything they did was wrong? Didn't think so. I was just saying that Cherokee is doing it also. Don't matter to me what they do and I won't stop doing business with them because of it. My point was that they are doing the same thing.

I can't say I blame these shops for trying to maximize their profits. What does bother me is that these same shops are always complaining about the big stores and touting for us to buy local. I used to go out of my way to buy from the local guy even if the price was a little higher. I am going to be all about the best deal now. It's a two way street the way i see it. If they aren't loyal to me, I have no reason to be loyal to them.

Oh I definitely get the fact that a business is there to make money and capitalize on this current market, but I guess to me it's just they way they did it. Leaving guns out on display with real world price tags on them, but not wanting to sell them to you for that because it might get more on gunbroker is what bothered me. For instance, there were several brand new Gen 4 Glocks on display that were stickered at $559 but he said they could get $600 plus for them online so that's why there were still there. Like others have said, keep those guns in the back. I mean I was literally sitting there with the gun in my hand with said price tag and was told I could buy it, but just not at that price. He pulled up that model up on gunbroker to show me what some of them were selling for and said I could basically pay those prices in the store or try my chance at bidding on the item. I was shocked really considering how much guns and ammo I'd bought from them over the years. Free market or not, that's just bad business for a local gun store to treat local loyal customers like that.

Exactly. I've always tried to support small local guys first. But now I'd dare to say I'd get better deals and service at one of the big box stores. Heck at least at Academy there going to sell me that gun on the wall at the price advertised and not give me a lesson on gunbroker economics.

I am starting to understand something about the folks who are complaining about these prices and business practices. I am friends with that same shop owner and his sons. There seems to be the belief that these businesses we have all been patronizing are really just our buddies or friends. Maybe that they owe us for our patronage? You may well have become friends with the owners or employees, but they are businesses. I feel for us all when we go into our favorite joint and it is bare, and the ones that are left are astronomically priced in relation to October$. I do, but it is a business. There are guns I want NOW, but will not be able to get for a while, if ever. Not just based on price, but availability and another looming weapons ban. We buy and trade out of a passion and love of a hobby that we greatly enjoy. Everyone needs to put themselves in the shoes of a business owner for a minute and understand that this is a volatile market and it is how they make their LIVING. The supply of what they sell has just gone sideways. Their prices are now jacked. Their availability is now screwed. They are doing what is best for their business right now and that is selling for a profit at current market prices. It is what motivates every business that has stayed in business, especially small businesses. These mom and pop places cannot price like Walmart and survive. They don't usually have broad revenue streams to balance out their gun business. They cannot just cater to their "buddies" and still survive. It is what any long term business has to be about, making money...being profitable

Now I know that there are gun guys out there that do it just for love, and that is great, but they are not really in business in the classic sense. They usually don't rely on it for income for them and a list of employees. They are often sole proprietors or home businesses with no overhead and their prices are great. More power to 'em. If they can't get guns next month, no big deal, they'll wait. If the guns are 2x expensive, no big deal, they will still sell them for the 0-10% they did before and pass along the sad tale if anybody can buy. The guy in the classic sustainable business is in a world of hurt. He has a giant building, a staff, costs. The market for 2x (and more) priced guns will dry up and he will be left without that revenue stream. He will have to rely on the "fat" from his profitable days. Things will be lean. It was the same cycle just a few years ago, ask a gun store guy. This run seems a bit more frantic with actual legislation going on the table. What will your gun guy do for a living, if there is a ban? What will you buy from him if astronomical is the new normal for pricing? What if we never get back to October$ again?

Now...do I think they should have stickers on guns that you cannot buy at that price? No.
Based on knowing that store owner well, is it likely an oversight that tags are out on auction guns? Yes.
Do I think the guns should be up for bids on GB? Yes.
Do I think they should sell you one for what they are selling/auctioning for now if you are in the store? Yes.
Would I prefer that all gun stores were my buddies and gave me family pricing? Yes.
