Do you carry without a round chambered?

plenty of people won't carry a semi-auto with a round chambered.
They aren't the kind of people who go to gun shows, take training classes, or register at gun chat sites like this one. But there are huge numbers of them out there. They just don't trust manual safeties, and don't think it's safe or responsible to carry a loaded and "cocked" gun on a daily basis regardless if it has a safety lever, or if you use it.

If I can't convince such people the errors in their thinking, I try to steer them toward a double-action revolver or a DA-Only semi-auto. That long relatively heavy trigger pull can be enough to convince them that it won't just "go off" by accident. Everybody knows that revolvers are supposed to be carried loaded, but a lot of newbies who learn about gun handling from watching TV thinks that it's normal to draw a gun, point it at somebody, make verbal threats, and THEN, when you have to shoot, rack the slide.

Hold on a second before you stab me and rob me ., let me work the slide on my pistol

This guy's experiment at the range shows that racking the slide adds nearly one second to your time in getting your shot off at your adversary. 1.8 seconds from signal to firing the shot if the gun is chamber loaded, but 2.6 seconds if he racks the slide to chamber a round manually.

When I was USN they taught full mag, empty chamber, weapon on safe (Beretta M9). When I was AF I was taught 1 in chamber, safety OFF, pistol holstered. Made the most sense. Round chambered-red dot showing. The whole process was actually inspect-able. You would get "dinged" if you didn't follow the procedure.

I have encountered folks that don't want to carry chamber loaded. I advise they may want to put the pistol up then. If the comfort or training level is such that a loaded chamber would make you uneasy, then carrying a gun is not for you. If you're afraid an unauthorized person will get your gun, then you are not storing it correctly. Carrying a gun with an empty chamber is foolish.
