Do you still believe in charity?

I don't give money to charity mainly because there is a lot of them where little to none of your donation actually goes towards the cause...
True, but there are also a lot that are extremely efficient at what they do. Several rating agencies. Here's one. http://www.guidestar.org/

I look at it as I do when I GIVE money to a friend.... I do not borrow it to a friend... so then I do not get pissed on how they spend it or whether or not they pay me back.... If I am not happy with how my donation is spent, I will not donate in the future....

I total agree with this philosophy darrenmd. I always "GIVE", not "LOAN" money to friends, if I have it and they really need it. By not doing so, it can wreck a friendship.

My problem was / is, I loaned money to an acquaintance (former college dorm mate) who then began to lie, and ignore and then begin to attack me personally with profanity via text message facebook, twitter, etc., all because I helped him when he reached out to me in a desperate time of need and I expected him to keep his end of the agreement and repay the loan. Now he's over 6 months late in repayment and although I've "written" off the idea that I'll ever be repaid in full by this classless piece of trash, I just can't seem to let go fully of the lying and disrespectful ungratefulness he has displayed taking advantage of my big heart. That's my real struggle.

Same here. If you can't afford to lose the money, you can't afford to loan it. I do have money loaned to one person, but it's a special case (more like a business loan).

I get what the OP is saying. Recently, my wife and I decided that we need to scale back on how much we've been helping people. It got to the point that we felt like we were being taken advantage of. We don't have whole lot of surplus time or money either. We have a couple friends that need to get smacked in the head by life. We'll be there to help them get back up, but we're not blocking punches for them anymore.

Sounds like I missed something. :pop2:

Recently someone on here asked for money to feed a family in need. Someone else suggested sending a walmart gift card in lieu of cash. Not even a week later the requestor talked on here about finally getting an xbox.

I don't know what he did with the money I sent, I just know if he bought an xbox with that money he deserves whatever bad **** happens/is happening to him.

Perhaps karma caught up with him....
Whether he used your money or not, requesting money from others and then buying something as discretionary as an xbox.... ah... nevermind.

Zesty it's not a matter of what I can or can't afford. I never expected to get the money back. I just know next time someone on the odt asks for money I'll be skeptical.

Well, that sux! Why don't you just ask him? When I asked if anyone wanted to help a family in need before Christmas, I got a flood of PM's and Emails from folks willing to help. When all was said and done I posted up pics of the family and the rest of the story. Matter of fact you might be able to see everything if you search "family in need". Suggest he do the same thing so people can see where there money went.

Maybe the requester did help the family with donations and did get a X-Box with their own money.

Let me clear up some things here for you guys, Since you all just like to assume things! My Xbox was from my OWN money!from selling other things to get it! If I wanted a Xbox so bad I could have just sold my g36 ever think about that? so why would I need your money to buy it? when you assume you make a ass out of you and me! maybe think before you speak next time?
