From the looks of steam coming from the hood after it was demolished and the headlights on, it was running and I sure can't see the benefit of staging something like that and sacrificing a running drive-able car.

It's called doing the stupidest **** for hits and likes on social media. People hang off the side of buildings, dance outside a moving car and eat tide pods for the same reason.
