I've been in the same boat as the OP. It got real old. If I find someone reliable, I'll stick with them and refer others because if they just do what they say they will stand out above many others. Unfortunately, I've had many run ins with people who seem to be self-employed only because they're unemployable. Having a house built was a nightmare for me.
