Field Care for Waterfowl
“A good mount starts with a good specimen”

Try and keep the amount of blood on the bird to a minimum. (Dab or wipe some off with a paper towel if possible) This will save time during the mounting process.

Let the bird’s body temperature cool down by placing it in the shade, a cooler or in a refrigerator before placing it directly into the freezer. Once cooled place the birds head over his back, try not to let the feathers place themselves in any odd positions. Place the bird into a freezer bag, or several layers of trash bags. DO NOT allow the bird to stay in the freezer more than two (2) months when wrapped in trash bags or small store bags. If your bird is left for a longer period of time it can get freezer burn, and that will cause the quality of the specimen to diminish. Also be sure not to allow the feathers to be bent or positioned abnormally, pay close attention to the tail and primary wing feathers.

Field Care & Capeing for Shoulder Mount

Take care of the areas that will be used on the mount itself. These areas include but are not limited to the areas around the front legs and shoulders, the neck and face. When prepping for a shoulder mount DO NOT cut the skin past the front legs. Begin caping the deer by cutting completely around the body beginning six (6) inches behind the front legs. Be careful not to cut any holes during the caping process. You will make a single incision down the back side of each leg, by following the color separation from white and brown on the hide. Remove the skin off the front shoulders and neck down to the head/ neck joint. Cut the head off of the body about six (6) inches behind the head/ neck connection. Once the head has been removed place it in two (2) or three (3) garbage bags and put on ice if you plan to deliver it that day. Or freeze and deliver it at a later date.

Shipping Birds
Shipping birds is both easy and cost effective. Place your bird in double plastic bags and keep frozen until shipping. When shipping to just place your plastic bagged bird into a small box of loose newspaper to both insulate and protect the bird during shipment.
Always ship out on Mondays or Tuesdays by UPS or FEDEX 2nd Day Air or Next Day Air to insure no weekend layovers. I will notify you

WARNING: NEVER USE THE POST OFFICE

It is a good Idea to Plug the Throat of birds and the anus with Paper towels to stop any bleeding which can cause Bacteria and accelerate the discomposing .
Make A cone with News papers and place the bird inside this cone and then place the bird head first toward the narrower end, then you may close the back end of the cone and tape it, this will keep feathers from disintegrating or damage.
