Finally ordered it: Vepr 7.62x54R 20"

Incredible gun... you'll enjoy it.

I've been waiting on the SGM mags for a while now too. Not really holding my breath on them actually showing up... I just don't see it working very well and I think they will look semi-ridiculous unless they do a double-to-single stack design somehow. I'd really like to see someone make a drum for these instead.

You made a good choice in selecting the 20.5" barrel VEPR. Their has been a lot of reports on this length barrel being the most accurate of all the barrel lengths, you will lose some distance with the shorter barrel. Their is a video on youtube of a 23" VEPR 54r where they show the barrel whip in slow motion. A while back I saw a target posted that was shot from 500 yards with a 20.5" 54r with surplus ammo and the shooter made 5 torso shots using a POSP scope. The target is saw, the youtube videos and the reviews of the VEPR's is why I chose the 20.5" as my rifle. At first I was all about the 23" or 27" but the longer the barrel got the less accurate they were do to barrel whip just like the PSL and SVD. I have seen a few VEPR's that had the barrel cut down to 18" but no targets or reports if the 2.5" shorter barrel was any better or worse in the accuracy department.

Their are a lot of furniture options out their and more being added as these rifles become more popular. When you decide to add a muzzle break make sure you do your homework. Their are a lot of muzzle devices out their and a lot of them don't work they just look good. I had a Tapco slot break laying around that works well on the 7.62x39 rifles so I added it to my VEPR but have not shot it yet to see if it tames the recoil of the 7.62x54r. So far the best muzzle break you will find is the effin A comp but it is pricey and hard to find in stock anywhere. Their was another good break but I can't remember who made it but I do remember it was just under $200.00 and that was to high for a break if you ask me.

Besides my VEPR in 54r I also own a 91/30 and an M44 Mosin Nagant. I would say that the VEPR and the M44 recoil about the same. I haven't fired them side by side so I am going off memory.

When you clean your VEPR make sure you also clean the gas tube, piston and bolt. The salt gets into everything so clean it well and you wont have any issues. I break my VEPR down completely and wash everything with hot water first then clean, lube and reassemble.

Here is a pic of mine before I put the slot break on it. I'll try to get some new pics of it with the break.

As for cleaning, I am a little familiar since I have a Mosin, I usually do the windex but am hearing more and more the hot water is the ticket. My concern is all the little places that the corrosive salts might get in a semi auto vs a bolt

It is chrome lined for a reason. Do not just do the barrel, pour some water down the gas port and gas tube.

Windex does work well on these for a quick clean, since you can spray into the gas system and receiver without fully disassembling it. I usually use some Windex at the range (the gun may sit in the trunk for a few hours afterwards), then a full clean when I get home, or the next day if it's late.

And FWIW... this is how I set mine up (there's a folding stock under there).

Front handguard is Carolina Shooters Supply. They have a bunch of VEPR parts and are a great company to work with.

Not in stock. SGM has been saying that these magazines will come to market since the beginning of 2014 and it has not happened yet. Every month they push the release date back a month or two. We have not seen any reviews because their are not any in use.

Thanks, this is the info I have been unable to find. I knew they were new to the market but was under the impression they got released in January. I guess I can place a backorder for one
