So, I'm working on my first AR build, and the main objective is to build a rifle under, or at least close to $600 (this doesn't include sights/optics). So far, I've got a complete lower and stock for $145, and now I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to get a complete upper and bolt carrier group. After hours of looking for parts, the best I can find is a complete upper for $400, but these don't come with a BCG, which will cost at least an extra $150, which completely kills my goal. I tried finding the parts separately and I figured the parts to be even more costly. Am I missing something, or was this just an unreasonable goal?

Unreasonable at this time. SOTA has pretty inexpensive complete uppers but it's hard to find quality parts that are inexpensive and not complete trash. IMO wait a month or two and stuff will really get back to normal.

Building a budget AR in this current market is all about patience. You can't expect to just go out and find a bunch of cheap parts right now. If it was that easy we would all be doing it. BCGs and barrels seem to carry a premium right now.

That being said, you're on track but now you have to be patient and vigilant. Look everyday for the parts you need that fall within your budget requirements. It may take a while but they will pop up. Most likely you'll get them here on the ODT.

Patience my man. Stay with it.

These two gentlemen are correct - its all about timing. Right now is quite frankly the worst time for a build with good parts both at a premium and 6 months on lead times. My thoughts are that your best bet is in finding someone that has an "extra" part here and there that is willing to let it go at a reasonable price. I would advise shopping the private market cause the retail market is really screwy right now with certain gun parts just like with ammo. If the gov does not double up on ban talk, then at some point the market availability is going to be very consumer friendly because the manufacturers of parts have been running through the roof for over 6 month. If/when demand softens there will be a short term surplus and a great time for deals.

send David at Classiccityfirearms (dealer on here) and price a SOTA upper...comes with BCG, etc. if you want to build cheap AND shoot cheap, get on the list to get that upper in 7,62x39 instead of 5.56!

the SOTA is a fine budget option you wouldnt regret.

i disagree. the market is already flooded with all the parts necessary to build as of April. prices are only very slightly above nov 2012 prices. the only shortage is ammo.
