Picked up a stripped lower today. My first parts build. Any advice on common rokie errors that I can avoid?

Do you have all the other parts you need?
Follow the TDP. This includes staking and torque specs.
Nothing in the lower needs Loctite.

Buy a damn oops kit before you start. The springs and pins like to try and escape.
1/4" carrage bolt from hard ware store for front pin and electrical tape.
This! They cost about .75 cents and will make the hardest part of the build super easy. A lot of guys will also work inside a gallon zip lock bag to minimize screw lose. I always put tons of tape on the receiver when doing the mag catch pin. Its were 95% of scratches originate from.
Use blue or green painters tape to protect the lower from oops marks. Get a flat side extended mag catch punch and the trigger guard install tool is very cool. I used this kit from Wheeler on my first couple.
Carriage bolt is a lot easier. Slide it in from back side, drop in spring, then detent into hole. Push down with punch and rotate 1/4 turn and remove punch. Use pin to push bolt back out and just make sure detent seats. Much easier than razor blade.
I’ve used all those tricks. Nowadays I use a tool purpose-built for the job. AR Pivot Pin Detent Installation Tool.
