First deer rifle…(.308 or .270)

Now days ammo availability is probably more important than cost. In that light, pic 308. Plus 180gr bullets make a decent brush gun. As far as scope, get at least a Nikon. Good glass and you won't need to use the adjustments for long range. The adjustments aren't uniform in my experience. But at 50yds, once sighted in you're good. With the scope set up right, you could use the duplex to shoot a couple hundred yards without adjusting the scope

The grey one is my tikka .308 upr and the camo.one is my weatherby vanguard .270
