If you really want to shoot a bunch of critters... Africa. A plains-game hunt can have a dozen or more species of huntable animals, limited only by your budget. It's expensive, but not any more than a NM elk hunt, and in Africa, you are going to get animals, pretty much daily. Can't bring back the meat, but you'll get to eat it while there. I'm glad to talk to folks about it if interested. I have no financial connection to anything safari-related; but I've done it a few times and know what to do to get started.

First elk hunt, what to bring....

Folks don't know what they're missing... (This is not aimed at you Geaux!)
First day in South Africa, I emailed my huntin' buddies that I'd seen 3000 lbs. of huntable meat on the hoof that first afternoon... my friend who was there said "You saw at least 8000...", and I said "yeah, but my friends will never believe that!". It's nuts. The whole hunting fields are like barnyards. Animals everywhere, and you're stepping on droppings just about every step. I'd go every year if I could afford it.
Killed my elk in Colorado years ago using a ruger 300 win mag with a skeletonized stock. One shot and he dropped in tracks at 200 yards. Didn’t feel the kick. On the bench, pre trip sighting it in, I did. Excitement of the hunt and you will not feel a thing. Good luck on your hunt. We expect pics when you harvest, using whatever caliber you use.
Going on horseback?
My wife’s Grandfather hunted elk for years.
They took horseback from camp and one year while he was in his 70’s he got bit on the hand at camp by a dog while he was on the horse.
He didnt think much of it but a couple days into the hunt his hand swelled up
Like a balloon from infection and a nasty fever.
He was kicking himself for not immediately cleaning the punctures.
He ended up okay but needed some IV antibiotics and a week long hospital stay as he cut the trip short and went to
Base camp early with an escort.
He never did go back elk hunting after that.
He’s 100 years old now and still living on his own.

Quality binocs. I’ve killed all my elk with 270. Patience! Quality foot wear.
- My vote is for the 7Mag but I seem to be in the minority. Which is fine with me
Any of choices will suffice. I would stick with .300WM or .30-06. Post pics of the hunt.
