First independent Silencerco Omega tests are not so hot compared to orginal published specs

once the cans got under 140db they all start to sound the same, maybe due to sonic crack. So for a rifle can all I care is that the platform intend to run gets under 140db, then I begin to prioritize weight, length, mounting options, blow back. durability, etc... I actually liked the micro cans in 556 I've played with.

Also once cans that shoot primarily subsonics get intot he low 120's its hard to tell the difference between a 118db shot and a 125db shot, IMO, so it becomes more important to listen for tone. For example the leonidas metered lower than my 44spl subonics, but the tone of the 44 is lower IMO. the 38 spl lever action I have meters lower than my 44 spl, but again the 44 tone is very low and generally more impressive.
Good to know.

Update today from Silencer Shop on the latest test - link above.

"Ok to put the Omega numbers to rest here are the results. When tested with the 150gr 308 that we were using we got 140.13 measuring at the end of the silencer. When we switched to using the 168 Gold medal match that SilencerCo uses we got 136 measuring at the end of the silencer. When we used the GMM and measured at the end of the barrel not the end of the silencer then we got 134 which is almost the same that SilencerCo got.

So this just shows how big of a difference the ammo can make."

Good info on how ammo makes a big difference on the 308. Any difference in 223 in 55 and 62gr weights?

I have a harvester in jail and just waiting to be able to try it out on both my 308 and 223 rifles. All I know that my PWS brake is a loud MoFo on my 308; but it does make for a good visual pressure wave for those watching when shot outside.

You won't really notice a difference b/t the 55 and 62gr, at least I never have.

heck I've never noticed a difference between my 168gr GMM and 150gr 308 hornady in terms of suppression.

And that is why dB meter tests are used for comparison. Each of us hears different tones differently, especially those of us in the gun crowd who suffer from some level of hearing loss due to shooting unsuppressed for so long.

What is not noticeable for some is very noticeable for others. For me, as long as it is "hearing safe" I am not worried about a couple of dB, one way or the other.

They changed their tune after Silencer Co bitched them out is what happened.
