My great-niece and great-nephew are visiting for a few days and I had the privilege of taking them shooting for the first time. Ages 10 and 8 respectively . I did 30 minutes of safety with verbal test questions before we left. They were shooting Marlin 60's, a squirrel stock for my great-niece and a West Point Edition for my great nephew. The squirrel stock is the same one I taught my daughter to shoot with and this trip brought back memories. I am very proud of them. Well behaved and safety conscious.

My uncle turned me put on shooting at about the same age with a Marlin 60. He was a Vietnam Veteran. I went from the Marlin to a Ruger MK1 and a Single Six . Then up to a Security 6 and his M1Carbine. When I was a kid and teenager there wasn't ANY more tacticool rifle than an M1C Paratrooper.
