What kind of crab
any fresh water crab or crawfish. they love snails.
careful they will hunt fish though.
i use to let them do their job and trade them in after they were done or got to big.
keep them littler in size. the bigger will go for fish.

Watching Assassin snails go to work on unwanted snails was both unsettling and fascinating when I had a tank.
I liked loaches over crabs or crawfish- I didn't have to worry about them nipping at the other fish and when there weren't any snails they ate pellet food or frozen bloodworms and mosquito larvae.
Edit to add- I was able to buy a couple of Dwarf Botia loaches locally in Lancaster PA and they were small enough not to add much to the tank as far as total fish went and kept the snail population down.
I kept live plants in my tank and even with washing them before adding to the tank I always seemed to pick up snails.
you cant avoid pest snails. they will come eventually.
so i have two tanks, both with different filters....questions; whats the cheapeast way to get new filters or make new filters for freshwater?

It wouldn't hurt to incorporate carbon, you can buy a netted bag at petsmart for that and buy carbon in bulk.
