If you dont make any statement to the cops, you are much more likely to be arrested and charged with murder (or agg. assault, agg batt, etc.).
Your bail might be set at 75,000. at a hearing 4 days later.

You might spend two months in jail held without bond before the cops and DA's office drop the charges.

I think Massad Ayoob spelled this out the best.

Tell the cops that you were attacked and had to defend yourself.
Describe the attackers if any fled.
Point out any witnesses.
Point out any evidence.
Tell them that you will be happy to make a statement and/or press charges as necessary, but that you want to talk to your lawyer before you do that.

Then SHUT UP.

If you talk to the cops after that, you have rescinded your right to stay silent.

Andrew Branca ("Law of Self-Defense" author and SD law specialist) also recommends requesting medical assistance. According to him, it's very common to have a heart attack after an adrenaline jolt like a self defense shooting. Also, you may not be aware that you are actually injured after the fact. Lastly, if you are going to be locked up overnight, cuffed to a hospital bed is probably better than in a jail cell.
