For years it was two spaces after a period when typiing. Somewhere along the way it got moved to one space. Don't know why, it just is acceptable now.

Yup, always taught two spaces but found out the other day that one space is the norm these days. I guess millennials are too tired/lazyto put in the extra space?

MLA formatting outlines the use of only one space after a period.

MLA says: Leave one space after a period or other concluding punctuation mark, unless your instructor prefers two spaces.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Today, after reviewing/correcting their work, they said that after a period in a sentence and before starting another sentence I HAVE TWO SPACES. They told me I WAS WRONG and my writing looked awkward. They asked me WHY would you put "2" spaces after a period in a sentence.

And I assume it goes without saying, the only acceptable response to this, is to immediately start leaving three spaces. Maybe that's just me...

Tell them that they are being age-ist and that you don't appreciate being triggered by their micro-aggressions.

If that doesn't work, tell them that single spaces after periods are a social construct and that you are space-fluid.
