Not sure what the grunts had in korea, I am sure it was not pleasant -- but that's why I joined the Navy -- worst we got was an open trough with flowing seawater -- well, the bucket in the bilge of a PBY was a bit off putting --
sea story -- open through with seats, so wisa guy at the high side wads up a batch of tp, lights it up and lets in flow down stream --- hot chestnuts for all hands --
 
City Soleil Haiti 1997 - Line of porta johns couple hundred feet long (a lot of them had leaks along the bottom seams...) right next to the 7500KW generators. Hot baking shyte all day long.

Go over to the the LIC (light industrial compound) with my buddies (I was armed escort - flip flops, swim trunks, t shirt and M16) and the fleet Navy and Air Force have flush toilets and single stall showers. They also lived in GP Med tents erected INSIDE a warehouse with AC units attached!!!

We did have the one kid who went into the porta let and got stung on his junk by a scorpion, had to send him to the rear in an ambulance. Medic was in disbelief at the swelling....
