Fraudulent activity on debit card

I quit using debit cards years ago. After having fraudulent charges year after year I finally realized it was my credit union that was getting hacked. I now use one cc for everything without issue plus I get cash back. Zero issues since I dumped the debit card. I also have a virtual cc number linked to my actual card used for all online purchases. Separates transactions for my records. I also use RFID sleeves for everything as well as a faraday box for keys.

Two brand card numbers each time.

I'd guess my bank or master card has an internal breach due to two separate issues occurring right after the new cards are issued.
One of the things that BOA does is update you old number at any places that are on autopay. I got hit with three charges from Netflix, seems the updates don't always go though and my old number was sold on the web. They used my old number for the charges and BOA allowed them since I was an established customer. Another time two phones were bought with my new replacement cart. The problem was my new card hadn't been delivered and someone had already cloned it.

Listen to this Frank Abagnale from "Catch Me If You Can" at the end he tells why you should use credit cards and not debit and how bullet proof the card can help you. Great story from the real deal!

Only place I use my Debit card is at the bank's ATM, and even that's not 100%.

A year or two back I got an alert that my balance had dropped below $100. I checked via the phone app and saw it a small transaction, then one that took it exactly down to $0.

I went by the branch and talked with them, and they asked where I had used the card last. They were a little mortified when I told them that I'd only used it at their ATMs, and the last time was the one at this branch a day or two ago.

I told them I had noticed a weird sticker on the ATM front, but figured it was just vandalism. I'd used that ATM dozens of times before and hadn't noticed anything different. They refunded my account no problem, and gave me a temp card.

She also called their security guys and I noticed when I went by the next day the ATM had been disabled. I asked the manager when I went in and she said they found a false front had been put on that read the cards and had a pass-through keypad to capture the PINs.

It was an exact duplicate of their ATM, and was almost undetectable. And since it fed the cards and the keystrokes to the real ATM underneath, no one even noticed it.

Anyone else having issues?

Last month, I replaced my card as the chip no longer worked and walmart among others didnt accept the swipe. 2 weeks later I had fraudulent activity. 8 transactions from Twitch Entertainment for 19.95 each.

I reported to the bank. And got a new card.
This week, I recieved letters stating my card is compromised. The other letters said no prior fraud/error was found and they were taking the money back from my disputes. I check my history last night and found a new fraudulent charge for $350.

There is more to the story but I'm not happy with United Community Bank. Calling them again...

Two new cards and this mess to deal with... fighting with the bank over the obvious.
I keep $100 in my checking account in case I ever need to hit the ATM(i can always instantly transfer more). Other than that, 100% of our purchases are via credit for this reason, plus my card earns 1.5%-10% depending on where I'm shopping

Get rid of cards and use cash.
I used to be an all cash guy, then covid hit. Nobody wanted to take it… skeered to touch it.
Switched to my cards for everything, most liberating concept in my life.
No nasty paper that came out of someone’s panties to keep up with, no pocket full of jingling coins that today’s youth couldn’t figure out when you attempted to pay with exact change. No holding up a line while you dig for it or write a check.
One statement every month, can track every expense (even that buck-fifty cuppa at the convenance store).
And sure, someone else somewhere can track everything you bought, but who really gives a ****?
Still keep a cash stash for emergencies, but if it comes down to that, probably be better served by a quality firearm.
