You aren't reading that correctly (or maybe you are)
what the inscription is saying is,

Colt

Detective Special -"special" is the name of the gun.

.38 [caliber] - it doesn't state the exact round the gun is chambered for.

Look it over carefully, and see if it says anything about "New Poilce" or "N.P."

The Detective Special was available in .32 caliber also.

I would love to have it, but I don't do BOS.

If you have fired it with 38 Special cartridges, it would have to be a 38 Special as they are longer than the Colt 38.
