I am not up to speed on "unlocked" phones. If I take my ATT sim card and stick it in this phone, it will work just like my current ATT phone?

You will need to call at&t first and discuss with them what you need to do to switch carriers but yes its service is unlocked and may be used with any which you prefer. Its originally a Verizon and they do not lock their phones. Its paid off.
