FWIR, a bonafide M38 should not have any provision for a bayonet

That is correct, no bayonet on an M38.

Yeah it shouldn't. I read somewhere that a lot were fitted with m44 stocks by soldiers so that they could have bayonets. The ones that weren't fitted with m44 stocks are supposedly more sought after. So I was just curious.
