**Just reviewed my ad and found comments and questions I had not seen. When I tried to respond I rcvd a msg saying I didn't have "privilege". Thx for your comments and if you'll call I'll answer any questions. Unfortunately the world wide net had very little info on Greenough. If there are any older "good" gunsmiths left maybe they can help. Thx.**
This "believed" 12 gauge double barrel shotgun is the most unusual piece from a bundle purchase from a local estate. After some research it's still unclear whether Greenough was a gun maker or an engraver in England and working between 1860 and 1890. Using that as a benchmark, we can assume this shotgun could be as old as 164 years or as new as 134 years old. It's a safe bet there is not one in your collection. I can tell you that in the early 1900's it stood vigil behind the kitchen door of a farm house in the Ben Hill area.
The intricate engraving is still visible from the tips of the rabbit ears, both receiver sides, bottom of the receiver and includes the trigger guard. It's difficult for the photos to do justice to the intricate detail and workmanship.
The barrels are laminated steel and in very good condition. Often the tips are worn thin or jagged from the use of black powder loads. Even the bores look good. The triggers and hammers maintain a strong and crisp operation. The breach release/lock is apparently missing the spring and does not stay in position, meaning the barrels will not stay in the locked position. I'm no expert but consider the woodwork to be in very good condition for the age.
