On page 219 of the book Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd Edition it states; That these revolvers were made for the United States Air Force between 1962 - 1963 with most of them being destroyed by the Government in Brunswick, Georgia but has never been confirmed. This one has the supporting documentation of a factory Smith and Wesson letter that states it is one of that contract. It has all the special features that it is supposed to have to include "U.S." stamped on the back strap. Special rear sight that extends past the frame and extended to the base of the front sight. Magna walnut grips with S&W medallions. Heavy two inch barrel. This one was shipped from the factory March 29, 1963.
