This is an very nice example of the Model 1891 Argentine Mauser rifle, one of many "export" models made for foreign governments, all based on the Mauser Model 1889. It was later sold out of service, and had the Argentine crest removed from the top of the receiver.
As with others we have seen, it has been "sporterized", shortening the barrel and removing the front portion of the stock, resulting in a "sporting carbine". The cleaning rod channel can still be seen on the front of the cut portion of the stock. It was also fitted with a carbine style hand guard on top of the barrel.
This example, like all of the Argentine Mausers made after 1897, was made by the renowned Company DEUTSCHE WAFFEN - UND MUNITIONS FABRIKEN of BERLIN. From 1887 onward LUDWIG LOEWE of BERLIN was part owner of WAFFEN FABRICK. It is an all matching serial rifle with a serial number U 2468. The serial numbers were issued sequentially with a single letter prefix. The Waffen Fabrik serial number records for the Argentine contract indicate that serial numbers T8000 - V3999 were produced in 1900.
