Georgia lawmakers seek to ban guns in the World Congress Center (HB 472)

Here is what I found out. The GWCC can already ban guns from the premises. If the event or organization wants to ban guns, they can provide metal detectors and security at their own expense to keep weapons out of their events.

This bill is an attempt by Republicans to frame the language of a bill that is going to get rammed through, otherwise. It is for the outdoor areas of the GWCC that didn't fall under previous bills that allowed for banning of weapons. As it is being proposed, it would require the organization that leases it to have eight foot high fences around the outdoor area and for the lessee to provide metal detectors, security, etc at their own expense. It is geared for the Super Bowl, World Cup, and other large events that are coming here and want to have some extra outdoor activities around the games.

It sounds like it is going through one way or another to appease these huge international events.

The one thing that was interesting was that the language was that the lessor MAY put in lockers for folks who didn't know that they can't have a legal concealed weapon. My input was that if they are going to inconvenience Georgia citizens like this, it needs to read SHALL put in lockers.

It's horse**** and I don't approve of it. It's getting through anyway.
No, they cannot ban guns from the premises. Only from the buildings there with metal detectors. This bill would make the outdoor area off limits when an 8' fence is in place.

Just got this in email...
