Gewehr 43 (updated pics)

I replaced the gas system with a new shooters kit system. Will post pictures and a write up about it tonight. Wasn't very difficult. Have learned that the handguard is aftermarket, from reading other message boards that is pretty common to see these days.

Still haven't shot it yet, waiting for my 8 mm feel gauge to come in so I can definitively test for headspace. From everything I've seen, it should be perfectly fine, but I want to make sure.

Guys over on the G43/K43 board on gunboards are telling me the hand guard is "durafoil" and is original....I guess it's like bakelite

I was about to post that. Nice rifle all the way round. Exactly how I like to get them. Shooter's kit is a great spend. I pull and reduce charge weights of milsurp 8mm (15% down) without ill effect. Have shot mine fine at Talladega on the 600 yd range. These can be great shooters despite the rantings of 14 year old basement dwellers' opinions.

I had a super nice G43 back in the 70's. While shooting it the bolt blew out the back, metal fatigue.. took the back of the receiver off. Late war steel quality wasn't as good as prewar. I ended up selling it for parts, I only paid $150 back them. Shame, it was a nice one.

Scary! You get hurt?

No, the bolt missed my right ear by millimeters, but it did shake me up. Now I bench a surplus weapon and tie a string to the trigger and fire it a few times before I shoulder it.. But with older weapons and some new ones, you never know what will happen. A friend had a barrel blow on a Mosin 91/30. Split it wide open, I think he wet his pants on that one :becky:

This is the prototypical failure on G43s I believe. The shooter kit is supposed to prevent this nowadays.
