What's your opinion on the silver reflective "emergency blankets"?

The mylar ones?

I always have one in the truck, BOB, or camping pack. god forbid if you were hiking and had a submersion, you're gonna want/need one of those. they are invaluable. strip off the clothes and wrap with this while you start a fire.

I always pack at least one.
They suck as a blanket (condensation), but they have many other uses.
With the help of a vacuum sealer, they squish flat too.

I like the slightly more expensive "sleeping bag" style blanket.
It is more effective as a blanket, and you can easily cut the seams open for use as a rain fly, wind deflector, ground cloth, etc.

I have the "blanket" style as well.

^^^ Good price, especially for REI!
These are nice b/c they are sturdy, with grommets and sewn edges. You can get a variety of colors too.
But they are bulky and heavy compared to others. Coleman, SOL and others package them, but they are the same:

Sportsman's Guide carries the cheapie blankets in an 8-pack for about $2.00 each. That encourages you to open one and experiment with it!

SOL offers several choices of sleeping bags, look for "emergency bivvy"

the 2-person Mylar bivvy is practical and roomy, weighing only 4.9 ounces:

the 1-person Mylar "SOL Emergency Bivvy" is minimalist, but seals out wind and rain like no blanket can at only 3.8 ounces:

I like the "SOL Escape Bivvy" at 8.5 ounces best, because it is breathable fabric, not Mylar, reducing condensation:

Oh, I just found a 4-pack of orange Mylar "survival bags" for @ $3.50 each. Great deal!

I carry them in my bag also (large sleeping bag style). They do kinda suck as your only blanket but make a great wind/water barrier. I've seen people use spray glue and attach them to the inside of thier tarps to reflect the radiant heat from a camp fire. I keep telling myself I will do that too but I guess I have an "around-to-it" problem. I just havnt gotten around to it yet, lol. I got mine from Wish.com
It's really hard to beat their prices but you have to wait a while for shipping

LOL SJ has that effect on people.

I have a bag full of cans in the garage. Mostly the short chicken/tuna fish cans, and the big ones (like large Spagetti-Os cans).
Plus left over metal tins from Christmas cookies, Altoids tins, etc.
They are so thin that they are super light, and cost nothing, so you can trash them after a camping trip.

Steel cans, especially the big ones, are hard to find with the shift to aluminum cans.
Note: if the inside of the can is white, it is a painted aluminum can----no good for cooking over a fire.

I even have a can in my GHB; it fits perfectly over my SOL bivy sack, so doesn't take up any space. It does give me extra water boiling capacity.

WARNING: you know you are in trouble when you realize that you have mapped out the locations of every prickly pear cactus and yucca plant in your area!
Thanks Johnny,

I found a supply of the big steel cans (#10) at the grocery store deli. Just ask them to save you some.
