I have shot the neck but hit over the spine in the meat. It immobilized it but I had to take my little .22 pistol between the ears. I recommend center of the neck with a bullet that mushrooms well.
Right on.

Where at on the neck? Seems a rather large consensus says neck but I've never tried it but I also never missed the heart I was aiming at.

Anywhere on the neck with a high velocity expanding bullet will punch the ticket.

Heart and lung shots are fine too, but just makes a bigger mess to clean up when processing the deer.

Understood! I will try that if my fat ass ever gets motivated or has the need to hunt again.

Ready for TEOTWAWKI I could use the weight loss program.

If everybody shot their deer in the neck my job would be immensely easier.
Head shots obviously are great too but VERY few hunters have the skill or understanding of their rifle to pull it off ethically, which to me is the most important part.
I recommend base of the neck, where the shoulders connect. You won’t damage much meat and you’ll for sure break the spine. It’s also nearly as big of a target as the vitals behind the shoulder are, unless you’re shooting bambi’s.
I see a ton of high shoulder shot advocates on FB pages and that’s a great way to drop your deer AND ruin your shoulders and half your backstrap in the same shot.

High shoulder shot is so talked about on the interwebz I figured it would have more votes.

Only time I ever lost a deer was bow hunting. I shot it approaching nightfall and I didn't wait long enough before going to look for it. Found it a year later on another hunt lying dead under a bush not 150 yards from where I shot it. Now I will only kill deer in the morning because in the dark you can't see shyt.
Same here. I like to have all day if needed. I don't remember ever shooting one at the end of the day. I think if I did, I'd wait till morning to start tracking. Mark the spot and leave.
Actually I do remember at least one. 45 Colt rifle at 130yds, one shot. Dropped her in her tracks, complete pass through

Example of a neck shot vs “behind the shoulder”/gut shot from this morning.
Ya’ll tell me which one you’d rather eat lol.
Obviously I saw the ribs off of these and hose the crap out of them but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s been marinating like that on the inside against the tenderloins and backstrap for who knows how long it took the hunter to get it to me.

Seems like an extreme example but point taken.
