I'd like to trade 2 x 1986 MS69 $25 gold eagles for 1 x $50 same year / grade. Looking at retail prices they seem to vary significantly. So my question is, would that be an equitable trade or is someone loosing out ?

personally i would not make that trade.
if you went to a store front dealer even though the 2 eagles you want to trade have the potential to make more money through premiums it will not correlate to an even swap from their perspective.

Your two are technically worth more due to the premiums associated with fractionals. The only condition I would personally make that trade is if I was already sitting on a healthy stack of fractional gold. And likely only with a good friend where I might forget about the premium.
