gold panning

can you pan for gold on the shores of public lakes like Atatoona and Lanier?
The last time North Georgia had a gold rush, it was over 100 years ago, and those lakes didn't exist then.
Although some of the streams and creeks that feed into the lakes may have been panned or mined 100 years ago, in all that time there must have been some erosion going on, covering up some areas with fresh silt and mud, while other areas the water has washed away tons of dirt to expose clay and other minerals in the ground that have not been near the surface before.

Aside from the lake question and Corps of Engineers issues, what about panning for gold on private property with the land owner's permission? Land that has little streams and creeks running through it, or even farm ponds (the water may not be running, but you can dig dirt and use the water to rinse it/ pan it right?)

I'm thinking that even areas that may have been test-panned for gold in the 1880s may be worth revisiting today, if you can dig into some new soil samples.

I always see a super large dredge at Knox'z Bridge off of hwy20 going to canton, They said they are dredging sand, But they an 8' wide sluice on the back of that thing.
